The amount of people who are suffering from lower back pain, shoulder, hip and/or knee pain has increased dramatically in the past several years. Our sedentary lifestyle has proven time-and-time again that this isn’t the solution to fighting pain. Medically, we are fortune to be living in the best of times. Sports medicine and exercise science are helping many people to become pain free. Yet we have the highest rate of injured people in the world. According to Oxford University, injuries are one of the most serious public health problems facing the United States today. The health and welfare of all Americans are impacted by injuries through premature death, disability, medical costs and lost productivity.
Once your body feels the first sharp pain hit your lower back, hip or shoulder; it is a sure sign that your body is trying to tell you that it is now guarding an injured area. The causes for experiencing lower back pain, hip and/or shoulder pain are numerous and are not always as a result of doing heavy lifting. Whether you are a mother who is constantly lifting your children, a furniture mover who is lifting heavy objects all day or an office worker; everyone should consider starting their day by doing a few easy stretching exercises to loosen up their muscles for the day.
In order to avoid a lifetime of chronic muscle pain, there are five simple rules that you can follow:
• Always bend your knees and keep your back straight when lifting objects off the floor. • Keep the object that you are lifting as close to your body as possible. • Whenever the object is heavy, go down on one or both knees. • Always maintain balance and control throughout the lift. • Do proper stretching or warm up exercises before periods of extended lifting.
Muscle pain is not caused by just one lift. Improper lifting practices over a period of time causes a series of events that lead up to muscle pain. With 80% of the population experiencing some sort of muscle pain, it is a quite clear that most people are not using proper lifting techniques and/or doing warm up exercises and stretching.
By practicing proper lifting techniques and doing exercises, you can maintain a healthy lifestyle and enjoy a body that is free from pain. In order to stay healthy or improve strength, it is not necessary to do an hour of exercise each day. All you need to do is to learn how to strengthen and stretch large core muscles, as well as workout to keep your posture in proper alignment.
