THE JOSE FUENTES STORY
By David Greenhouse
Nothing could have prepared me for the
experience I had just footsteps off Denville's Main
Street. Jose Fuentes invited me to visit, his fitness
salon, 'Shapes R In'. It sounded like fun. Two
innocent-looking pieces of equipment, a
step-bench and a body bar, stood before me.
"These can make you feel good", Jose
announced. Well, I've been working out at a gym
for 3 years. I thought I was in great shape and
knew what I needed to know. Well, less than an
hour later, I was re-introduced to my body. That
bench and bar had become instruments of
construction on my legs, arms and back. A
warm, tingling feeling flowed in me. My muscles
were supple and relaxed. I felt good in places I
didn't know were places.
With a knowing hand, he touched my knee, measuring the tension and release. In terms
anyone can understand, he explained muscle memory and range-of-motion. I feel smart,
renewed and excited.
When he arrived in the States 10 years ago, Jose, had high hopes. Born and educated in Mexico
City, Jose, age seven, started learning martial arts from his dad. At 10, he was teaching
Northern-style Kung Fu to other children.
Jose, got his first job at a General Nutrition Center, where he rose from stock boy to Senior Sales
Manager. Jose's been working as a top consultant and trainer in the most fine and prestigious
health clubs in northern NJ. In National competition, he placed 5th in the celebrated National
Eastern Classic body-building contest and 3rd in the Natural Forever, Amateur Body Building
Association event.
His uniqueness as a trainer is his creativity. He lets each student feel his or her own inner
strength through calisthenics and employ that strength in training. Jose is certified in low impact
aerobics, PNF stretching and Cardio-Core instruction.
Jose, is also a certified member of the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He is currently
pursing certification from the National Strength Conditioning Academy as a Conditioning Coach
Specialist. In his leisure, he reads history, politics and motivational books. Via the internet and
health newsletters, he writes about alternative medicine and nutrition.
"Thirty minute workouts do not work, Jose, contends, "they generally center on cardiovascular
activity, aerobics, plyometric training and treadmill. My 45 minute workouts include cardio plus
toning, strength training, stretching plus proper posture, breathing and relaxation techniques -.
Jose, guarantees results in two weeks. I think he's being humble.
